Abstract

SAEZ, Virginia. A look into research of media, violence, and schools. Entramado [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.1, pp.136-155. ISSN 1900-3803.  https://doi.org/10.18041/entramado.2015v11n1.21117.

This paper discusses the current status of research works that address the issue of mediatization of violence in schools from the mid 1970s to present. The proposed map shows the progress of research, particularly in Latin America, of the ways in which the media display the issue of violence in relation to young people and schools. The search strategy consisted of looking in catalogs of scientific journals, reference thesis repositories, and publications by specialized government agencies. It proposes a classification of works based on three dimensions: content and forms of violence in the discourse of information on the media; informational coverage of young people and their engagement in violence; and schools as a privileged setting for mediatization of violence. First of all, it examines the main theoretical and methodological aspects associated with research. Then, it goes on to review the dimensions, topics, and approaches that have been the focus of interest of social researchers, pointing out the most frequently-addressed issues and areas yet to be explored. The mapping initially reveals concern with representations and discourse practices of violence in the media, the leading role of young people in the media coverage, and increased mediatization in the school setting.

Keywords : School; violence; media; discourse; young people.
