Abstract

Maestro Arnulfo Briceño Contreras was born in Cúcuta, Norte de Santander, on 26 June 1938 and passed away on 11 June 1989. An outstanding and versatile Colombian composer, vocal soloist, arranger and choir director, he was a music pedagogue at Universidad Pedagógica Nacional and an attorney from Universidad Libre. Since he was very young, the maestro made his talent known as part of the group Los Vallenatos together with Alfredo Gutiérrez, known as "the child prodigy of the accordion"; his performance led him to create a musical production characterized by its versatility in the themes corresponding to different Colombian rhythms. A significant part of part of his musical production was characterized by social criticism, which would lead him to be recognized as one of the pioneers of protest music in Colombia. Bearing in mind that next June 11, 2019 marks the thirtieth anniversary of maestro Arnulfo Briceño Contreras' passing, this paper aims to pay tribute to the memory of a fruitful and very talented son of the Colombian nation.
