Abstract

CERRILLO GARNICA, Omar. Rap Against Rape: Hip hop for Claiming Against Gender Violence in Ecatepec. Pensam. palabra obra [online]. 2021, n.26, pp.32-47.  Epub Feb 25, 2022. ISSN 2011-804X.  https://doi.org/10.17227/ppo.num26-12902.

Mexico has become one of the most dangerous countries in the world in terms of gender violence. In recent years, feminist movements increased public notoriety in the country, expressing new protests repertoire, and the music becomes an important expression inside feminist movements. Ecatepec, a suburb of Mexico City characterized by poverty, marginaliza-tion, and violence, has become one of the municipalities with more femicide incidence. Inside this hostile context, a group of female rappers creates music to seek women's empowerment and denounce gender violence in their location. This article analyzes the discursive forms of this music by looking at the social and political dimension, applying a method developed by the author for the analysis of social discourse in music. Likewise, given the particularity of this case, this research will add other theoretical views, such as the concept of "artivism", as well as gender perspective for a better understanding of the subject. This project aims to demonstrate the discursive force of music, its importance for social movements, especially, the feminist movement, allowing us to improve our analysis tool on the social discourse of music.

Keywords : popular music; sociology of art; feminism.
