Among the different agents for controlling oil spills in seas, natural dispersant formulations are presented as a sustainable alternative to conventional chemical dispersants. This study analyzes the efficiency of a surfactant mixture of vegetable origin with D-limonene solvent, to disperse petroleum hydrocarbons present in salt water bodies. This was evaluated with two types of commercial hydrocarbons in Colombia: Castilla Blend crude of 19.1 ° API and South Blend crude of 29.8 ° API. The data showed an average dispersion effectiveness of 22.83% for Castilla Blend and 49.98% for South Blend crude respectively. These results reveal the potential of natural surfactant mixtures to be an ecological and economical solution in the control of hydrocarbon spills.
