Abstract

CARDONA RAMIREZ, Hernán. The Fear of God in the 21st Century: Some Up-to-Date Faces in the Bible. Cuest. teol. [online]. 2014, vol.41, n.95, pp.133-166. ISSN 0120-131X.

Abstract: The paper studies, from the perspective of exegetical document revision and biblical theology, the role of the "Fear of God" in several Sapiential Books of the Old Testament in connection with different maxims of the New Testament. A remarkable argument is the difference between expressions: the fear of God is equivalent to the fear of the Lord in the Book of Proverbs and, at the same time, the fear of God as final cause in the Book of Job is not sufficient to resolve the dilemma of Job, but opens the horizon of understanding to the whole human life in its relation with God. Job fears God and, however, he lives the painful experience of suffering. Therefore, the fear of God should be opened to the proposals of the Ecclesiastes and the biblical categories of compassion, mercy and goodness until fully understanding that those who love the God of Jesus (Abba) are good in what they do.
