Abstract
REME, Pétronille. ECONOMISTS AND SOCIOLOGISTS DIFFERING MARKETS. Cuad. Econ. [online]. 2005, vol.24, n.43, pp.13-34. ISSN 0121-4772.
This paper questions the possible cross fertilization (Schumpeter, 1954) between Economics and Sociology. It uses recent works, notably sociological ones, about market relationships. Though the market is, in economics, a traditional object of study, it has started to interest an important number of sociologists only since the 70s, in United States and in Europe. This paper suggests that the main difference between economics and sociology rests upon the type of social organization these disciplines assume in their respective models, and explains this difference through the distinct aspirations of their researchers: while sociologists seek to explain the actual market process, economists (at least neoclassical economists) conceptualize efficient markets. Unless the recent works of econ-omists, like Kirman, heralds a watershed in the discipline, the paper considers that the cross fertilization long-awaited by Schumpeter is hard to conceive.
Keywords : market; economic sociology.
