Abstract

GARASSINI, María Elena. Narratives by relatives of cancer patients. CES Psicol [online]. 2015, vol.8, n.2, pp.76-102. ISSN 2011-3080.

The study aimed at understanding the narrative construction by the relatives of family member diagnosed with cancer. Family caregivers from Luis Razetti Cancer Institute in Caracas were the participants. The data collection was taken by a semi-structured interviews based on topics related to experiences during the assistance to a relative who is dealing with cancer. The results allowed determining three major categories that reflect the narrative construction of the caregivers: sequential, relational and procedural category. Also, the presence of 5 concepts or constructs was indicated: emotions, communication, biographical rupture, patient care and transformation. It is concluded to review patient, family and medical communication, to implement support groups to face the patient's disease, and respect the use of natural treatments, and the implementation of the male role in the patients' care, among other aspects.
