Abstract

ZULUAGA, Esnedy. PORFIRIO BARBA JACOB: THE UNREALIZED SEARCH FOR PERFECTION. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2020, vol.11, n.21, pp.11-25. ISSN 2145-8987.  https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202011.21.01.

Barba Jacob achieved, from his peripheral position as a rare poet, a prominent place in Hispano-AmericanModernismo. Despite the dissonant and retrogressive tone used to categorize him, the search for perfection of form and a strict balance between musicality, rhythm and rhyme defined his work. I am interested in the meaning and transcendence of this search, essential to the artistic creation of his demonic poet hero. From his prologues and poems, I inquire into Barba Jacob´s obsession to publish a carefully refined work, definitive in the creation of his great metaphor: the unfinished journey to that enigmatic place called “Acuarimántima”.

Keywords : Modernismo; Porfirio Barba Jacob; Colombian poetry; Latin American studies; authors’ poetics.
