Abstract
KIRK, Stephanie. PALAFOX AGAINST THE JESUITS: MASCULINITY AND EPISTOLARY SCANDAL IN NEW SPAIN. perifrasis. rev.lit.teor.crit. [online]. 2022, vol.13, n.25, pp.141-158. Epub Feb 26, 2022. ISSN 2145-8987. https://doi.org/10.25025/perifrasis202213.25.08.
This study analyzes the polemical correspondence between the Bishop of Puebla, the renowned ecclesiastic Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, and the members of the Society of Jesus in New Spain during the 17th century. The malaise expressed in these letters stems from the tensions caused by the expression of hegemonic masculinity in the socio-religious atmosphere of the Colonial era. While the texts are private, they detail highly public acts that are connected to the performance of masculinity in a society characterized by an adherence to spectacular expressions of Catholic piety.
Keywords : Juan de Palafox y Mendoza; Society of Jesus; masculinity; epistolary culture; colonial Mexico.
