Abstract

PINEDA DUQUE, Javier A.. Gender and Entrepreneurship: the Case of the Beauty Industry in Bogotá. Soc. Econ. [online]. 2014, n.26, pp.239-269. ISSN 1657-6357.

Based on the critique made by feminism and masculinity studies about the concept and theory of entrepreneurship as universal and gender free, this article offers some critical elements to recent literature on entrepreneurship, genre, and economic development based on research in the personal services of the beauty sector in Bogotá. The research is based on interviews and a representative survey for the sector. Using the sexual division concept of labor and emotional work, we explore how the creation of value in the beauty service is carried out through practices that build gender identity and help promote entrepreneurship.

Keywords : Entrepreneurship; Gender; Beauty.
