Abstract
MAYORGA, Luis E and CLAVIJO, Claudia. Imminent paradoxical embolism evidenced by echocardiography in patients with patent foramen ovale. Rev. Col. Cardiol. [online]. 2008, vol.15, n.5, pp.243-246. ISSN 0120-5633.
A 72 years old male patient with previous history of pulmonary thrombosis was admitted with an ischemic stroke. In a transtoraxic echocardiogram, as well as in a posterior transesophagic one, a mobile mass suggesting a thrombus going through a patent foramen ovale, was found. Facing an imminent paradoxical embolism, surgical thrombectomy was considered that could no be realized due to infection. Anticoagulation with low molecular weight heparin was initiated. A control echocardiogram showed complete disappearance of the mass. The patient was discharged with oral anticoagulation.
Keywords : paradoxical embolism; patent foramen ovale; stroke; echocardiography.
