Abstract

BUSCHINI, José. Drawing Boundaries: Sociological Reflections on the Configuration of Experts and Expert Knowledge in the Cases of Nutrition and Oncology in Argentina (1920-1940). Hist. Soc. [online]. 2020, n.39, pp.309-332. ISSN 0121-8417.  https://doi.org/10.15446/hys.n39.81006.

This paper analyzes some issues concerning the way in which the medical profession expanded its influence in Argentina, specifically from a point of view that considers the role of experts and expert knowledge in the configuration of social practices. Baring this in mind, it analyses the formation and institutionalization of two intellectual fields and medical specializations, oncology and nutrition, between the 1920s and the 1940s. In this context, this paper focuses on some key mechanisms for the drawing of borders between experts and laymen: initiatives to institutionalize higher level training and the popularization of the expert discourse in the media and schools. Lastly, this paper traces the limits of the differentiation between experts and laymen in some study cases in which expert knowledge was questioned or even completely ignored.

Keywords : sociology; experts; medicalization; Argentina.
