CARDONA ACEVEDO, Marleny; RUIZ OLAYA, Isabel and VARGAS, Carlos. Aproximación a los determinantes de la migración laboral internacional de Colombia. suma neg. [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.1, pp.93-114. Epub May 30, 2011. ISSN 2215-910X.
Migration as a concept is difficult to define because of its varied and changeable social, economic, and political dynamics. Definitions vary along with the explanations for the causes of the phenomenon and the individual or collective potential of social groups. For some groups of population, migration has been the result of the structural difficulties in countries as human capital drain or family and social fabric weakening. Colombia has seen migration waves since the seventies and studies have been done to characterize them broadly, but it is important to further deepen in the causes, region of origin and destination country, which may influence the decision to migrate. The main objective of this paper is to determine the economic, social, and political factors that influence the decision of the Colombian international migrants in the period 1990-2006, from the 557 replies received from the Internet survey sent to a list of a thousand migrants.
