Abstract

The oral cavity is the most common site of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, a disease with a high risk of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although the first treatment option for patients with oral cavity cancer is still surgical resection, many patients with advanced disease are treated with a multidisciplinary approach. Patients with lymphatic metastasis, in spite of keeping surgical margins negative, have been found to have high risk of locoregional recurrence and death from disease, and it is recommended that they receive postoperative radiation and systemic chemotherapy more often. The basis of this approach, as well as scientific and focus on future treatments for patients at high risk of cancer cavity that offer better quality of life and reduce the risk of mortality.
