Abstract

PAZ ABDALA, Jairo Andrés  and  CASTILLO MEDINA, Gisela. Atypical Guillain-Barre syndrome presentation: as brain stem stroke. Acta Neurol Colomb. [online]. 2012, vol.28, n.1, pp.42-45. ISSN 0120-8748.

We present the case of a female patient with rheumatic disease who was admitted with symptoms of focal and sudden onset, which were considered as symptoms of an ischemic stroke with possible location in the brainstem, in the course of a few days the manifestations evolved to engage the four limbs and loss of muscle-tendon reflexes in lower limbs, coinciding with the realization of brain MRI showing no abnormalities. This evolution was considered as a possible involvement of peripheral nerve, suggesting the diagnosis of Guillain Barre Syndrome, which was confirmed by neurophysiological study. The patient was treated with IV immunoglobulin G, and subsequente stabilization and complete recovery was achieved.

Keywords : Guillain Barre Syndrome; Polyneuropathies.
