Abstract

RUEDA-SANCHEZ, Mauricio. Medication overuse in Bucaramanga, Colombia: Prevalence and associated factors. Acta Neurol Colomb. [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.1, pp.20-26. ISSN 0120-8748.

Introduction: the use of analgesic is frequent in patient with headache; however there are not data on the prevalence of medication overuse headache (MOH) in Bucaramanga - Colombia. Objective this study was to determine the prevalence of MOH in Colombia and the associate factors to it. It was carried out a prevalence study by means of a questionnaire self-administered in inhabitants of Bucaramanga selected at random. The comparisons were carried out by means of the t-test or χ2; the factors associated with the medication overuse were dear with models of logistical regression. Materials and methods: the prevalence of MOH was of 4.8%. The associate factors were the migraine, the lower social stratum, prophylaxis, to have consulted with physician and the self-medication. With the exception of the naproxen, all types of analgesic studied are more frequently consumed by people with MOH. The acetaminophen and the combination of acetaminophen, acetil salicilic acid and caffeine are consumed in significantly more quantities by people with MOH. Conclusions: the prevalence of MOH in the general population of Bucaramanga is high in comparison with developed countries. The MOH is possibly associated to poor access to the services of health, inadequate services of health and to the self-medication among the patients with primary headaches, mainly migraine.
