Abstract
RUIZ-MORENO, Silvana; ARANGO-SERNA, Martín Darío; SERNA-URAN, Conrado Augusto and ZAPATA-CORTES, Julián Andrés. Mathematical model for the distribution network optimization of a courier and parcel company. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2020, vol.87, n.214, pp.248-257. Epub Oct 30, 2020. The distribution processes of the courier and parcel companies are complex due to the high number of customers, facilities and vehicles involved. This makes that network planning and resources allocation (infrastructure, people and vehicles) becomes a difficult task, requiring tools such as mathematical models that allow finding the best operating conditions, seeking to minimize operating costs and ensure adequate service levels for customer satisfaction. This article presents a mathematical model for the optimization of a courier and parcel distribution network, which is structured including a high number of customers, a set of central consolidation terminals and several satellite platforms, where customers are served, as traditionally occurs in this type of companies. The model allows customers and merchandise to be assigned to each network facilities by modifying the vehicle load factor and the application of the P-median concept, which results in reductions around 19% of the total distribution costs.
