Abstract
OSORIO, JH and POURFARZAM, M. Free and total carnitine in umbilical cord blood. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2002, vol.53, n.4, pp.335-340. ISSN 0034-7434.
Abnormal carnitine plasma concentrations have been found in children associated with primary and secondary carnitine deficiency, with decreased concentrations in blood and tissues, as well as elevated levels of the present study is to provide reference values for free and total carnitine from umbilical cord blood, as tool in the early diagnosis of inherited methabolic diseases. 130 cord blood specimens from full-term and normal birth weight children from a Colombian population (78 boys and 52 girls) were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry. No statistical significant difference between sex was found. Reference values for free and total carnitine in cord blood of 18.5 ±3.4 µmol/L and 20.9 ±4.2 µmol/L respectively are reported.
