Backgound. The increase in smoking, considered as a risk factor for oral carcinogenesis, has not allowed for the decrease in the incidence of oral cancer and pre cancer in last decades. Objective. To study the incidence of oral cancer in Colombia between the years 1989 and 2008 in terms of health care demand. Methodology and methods. It was performed a descriptive retrospective study that compiled the incidence data by health care demand found in the epidemiological record of Colombia's National Cancer Institute. Information regarding oral cancer was categorized according to gender. Results. In 1999 there was a significant increase in oral cancer incidence, reaching 3.05% in both sexes. Male population was the most affected. Conclusions. Greater involvement of dentists in the early diagnosis of injuries through an exhaustive physical examination is required.
