Abstract

The article addresses the historical end of the city as a process linked to politics. The starting point of the process is Plato's conception of democracy and the endpoint is the reformulation of the urban in the 19th century, when the construction of the metropolis coincides with the birth of the Police, in a fusion of architecture and social science. The paper starts out by exploring the link between city and politics in Greece, and then goes on to examine the relationship among architecture, social science, and the capitalist market of the 19th century. Finally, it addresses the polis in terms of the police domination of the urban scenario.
