Abstract

ARAUJO DA SILVA, Alzira Karla; GALVAO COUTINHO CORREIA, Anna Elizabeth  and  FRANCA DE LIMA, Izabel. Knowledge and technology in an information society. Rev. Interam. Bibliot [online]. 2010, vol.33, n.1, pp.213-239. ISSN 0120-0976.

This article is a reflection on the information society, the society of knowledge, the paradigm of cyber culture and the role played by information technology and communication in social progress. It highlights the social inclusion and exclusion that occurs within the information society and identifies the actions, intentions, and needs that accompany them. This reflection seeks to characterize the information society while trying to understand social, cultural, economic perspectives and the search for citizenship. It focuses on the analysis of new environments created by the technological revolution and their impact on information and knowledge in a globalized world. It recognizes education as a cornerstone in the creation of such a society and presents the case of Brazil as an example. In Brazil, thanks to the creation of new public spaces, educational policies, and technological advances, there exists a virtual circle of progress in the use of information technologies in schools and other areas of higher education. We conclude that for the consolidation of the information society, the inclusion and democratization of information are inseparable and determining factors.

Keywords : Knowledge; information and communication technologies; information society; democratization of information.
