This article reflects on a concept that is emerging as part of the new mission functions of universities, which should be reflected in an institutional policy to enable them to fulfill a function that is their direct responsibility. This function consists of bringing the knowledge generated as a result of research and extension work closer to society, in such a way that it has a greater impact and, at the same time, is an institutional opportunity to contribute to social responsibility. In this sense, a review was made of the concepts of social appropriation of science or knowledge and public communication of knowledge and social communication of science, to understand the meaning and especially the scope that each one has in the context of the public university, in which the contribution that it can make to society is of great relevance. Additionally, clarifying these concepts will facilitate the work of researchers when defining the products or ways of disseminating the results of their research.
