Abstract
ESPINAL RESTREPO, Juliana. UNIVERSALS, INDIVIDUALS AND INDIVIDUATION IN THE MIDDLE AGES. Escritos - Fac. Filos. Let. Univ. Pontif. Bolivar. [online]. 2011, vol.19, n.43, pp.371-400. ISSN 0120-1263.
The aim of the following paper is to expose in a concise way two of the most significant problems in the Middle Ages: the problems of the Universals and the Individuation. The first one refers to the ontological status of universal notions and the second one to the principle of individuation of the different substances. Regardless of being different problems, they are closely linked. The problem of the universals rose from its beginning the question on the ontological status of individuals, from which, eventually, the question of the individuation was derived. On the other hand, since the problem of individuation has not been considered on its own, it has been seen as becoming individual from the universal. Given this closeness, it seems necessary to establish how the concepts of 'universal', 'individual' and 'individuation' are connected between them. This is done with the general aim of a clearly understanding of such concepts.
