Abstract

VANEGAS, ISIDRO. The Imaginary Flight of Germán Colmenares. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2015, vol.42, n.1, pp.275-307. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v42n1.51353.

The essay in which Germán Colmenares describes José Manuel Restrepo's History of the Revolution as a historiographical prison continues to be viewed as an accurate analysis. In that essay, Colmenares deconstructs a work that he regarded as an obstacle to understanding the revolutionary event and as the source of the Colombian sense of its own origins within which historians have been imprisoned. This article challenges both of these assertions by revealing how 19th century promoters did not regard Restrepo's work with the authority that it is currently awarded. Therefore, political associations based on this work could not have been the basis upon which the founding fathers built their myths and New Granada constructed its own image.

Keywords : Germán Colmenares; José Manuel Restrepo; revolution; Colombia; nation.
