Abstract

MIRABAL, JORGE ARTURO. THE OTHER XANTOLOS. INCLUSION AND MIGRATION VIEWS IN A RITUAL AT THE HUASTECA POTOSINA, MEXICO. Maguare [online]. 2021, vol.35, n.2, pp.91-126.  Epub Mar 16, 2023. ISSN 0120-3045.  https://doi.org/10.15446/mag.v35n2.98460.

Th s ethnographic work examines the ritual aspects and the impact of migration on one of the most important celebrations in Mexico, the Day of the Dead. It specifically delves into the Xantolo, the Nahua version of this holiday celebrated in the State of San Luis Potosi. This festival expresses the transformations of local life, both in the Nahua communities as well as in the municipal centers. I examine how Nahua migration to the northern industrial city of Monterrey and Nahua migrants' participation in the Xantolo have resulted in increased representation and visibility of mestizo and indigenous women and non-heterosexual people in the Xantolo.

Keywords : gender relations; Huasteca potosina (Mexico); Nahua migration; reifications; representations; rituals; sexuality; Xantolo.
