The academic review is an evaluative macro genre that is found in specialized journals. Yet, compared to other genres such as the research article, it has received scarce attention. The purpose of this article is to approach the theoretical concepts on the academic review, its typology and textual relations that are implicit in its structure as well as in its discursive construction. For this reason, the focus will be on specifying its epistemological foundations. However, since it is a wide subject, a synthesis of its typological variation will be presented. The aim is to contribute to a better knowledge of this genre, which has a crucial effect in the transformation and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
