Abstract
OSORIO CASTRO, Daniela. METAPHORS AS A PERSUASION STRATEGY IN JEHOVA’S WITNESSES PUBLICATIONS. Linguist.lit. [online]. 2021, n.80, pp.299-318. Epub Dec 13, 2022. ISSN 0120-5587. https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.lyl.n80a18.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses are a christian community focused on transmitting Jesus’ teachings. In their regular preaching activities, they use publications that present numerous rhetorical strategies aimed to persuading the public. The present work analyzes one of the most recurrent strategies: metaphors. For this, similes and analogies from two of their books for adolescents were taken as the corpus. The identification of characteristics, patterns, and communicative effectiveness allows the researcher to select metaphors that reflect their belief system, and it is verified that this discursive strategy is efficient to reproduce that system.
Keywords : Jehovah’s Witnesses; metaphor; discourse analysis; simile; analogy.
