Abstract

UMANA CORRALES, Olga  and  SUAREZ DE LA TORRE, Mercedes. Description and explanation of the desing of instruments to measure terminological and translation competence in professional translators. Rev. esc.adm.neg [online]. 2011, n.70, pp.22-41. ISSN 0120-8160.

This paper shows the description and explanation of the design of four instruments which measure the terminological competence (Cabré, 1998) and other translation subccompetences (PACTE, 2000). It aims at explaining each of these four instruments in details: (1) ticketed texts which contain translation problems; (2) instruments which evaluate ticketed texts; (3) questionnaire on the translation process-semistructured interview; (4) instrument for the operation of different categories- structured interview. To select specialized texts different criteria were taken into account: specialization level, terminological density, diversity of translation problems and terminology. To ticket all texts, different contributions from Nord(1991) and Orozco (2000) were taken into account regarding definition and classification of translation problems. All designed instruments represent a solution to all gaps existing in the field of translation and terminology, as well as the sources to develop translation tools.

Keywords : Translation competence; Terminological competence; Specialized translation; Professional translator.
