Abstract
CORTES ZAMBRANO, Sonia Patricia. Valuation of the economic model of the third millennium. Prolegómenos [online]. 2023, vol.26, n.51, pp.27-36. Epub Oct 17, 2023. ISSN 0121-182X. https://doi.org/10.18359/prole.6154.
There are controversies derived from the functionality of the economic model based on the conception of the competitive system, where the role of state intervention is discussed. Neoliberalism warns that if markets are efficient and fair, state intervention is unnecessary. However, the evidence shows the opposite. The exploitation model, which generates social and environmental crises, demands rigorous intervention; structural economic inequality, or the system of political institutions, cannot be separated from environmental problems. Concerning this, the 21st century opens with an excessive concentration of wealth and private property added to financial and fiscal obscurantism that imposes a model that fosters social inequity. Undoubtedly, the assessment allows us to reflect on what would be the most efficient form of intervention of the model, and public policies and responsible ownership are proposed as important alternatives.
