Abstract

LEMOS ALVES, Vicente Eudes. The North-Central Region of Brazil: Recent Territorial Dynamics in Rural and Urban Areas. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.1, pp.47-60. ISSN 0121-215X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v23n1.33614.

Abstract The article discusses the territorial dynamics of the Brazilian agricultural frontier in the country's north-central region. This space, which has undergone a recent agricultural modernization, is facing new territorial dynamics due to a significant increase in production of basic industrial, commercial, and services commodities. These changes can be observed in both rural and urban areas, thus indicating that the Brazilian agricultural frontier is acquiring new spatial, economic, and demographic features deriving from the presence of modern agricultural entrepreneurs, big companies, and workers. The contradictions that have arisen are also significant since this process benefits only certain sectors of society, which generates different types of conflicts.

Keywords : exclusion; agricultural frontier; migration; agricultural modernization; territory; urbanization.
