The relation between cities and rural spaces is currently increasing. This study analyzes and relates the distribution of population density, socio-professional population groups, and rural and peri-urban poverty in terms of accessibility (travel time) to the urban centers in the region of Bío-Bío, Chile. The results show that the presence of farmers, workers, and unskilled agricultural laborers is the most representative of rural and peri-urban zones. Findings also identify a significant concentration of poor households in the region.

Keywords : lifestyles; socio-professional groups; peri-urban; urban-rural relations.
