Abstract

This article aims to analyze the contributions and challenges when trying socio scientific issues (SSI) in science teachers' education programs. First, this paper provides a review of research studies carried out in the last few decades in the field STSE, emphasizing the need of including SSI as a research problem in science teaching. Second, the authors present the contributions of the research group "Alternaciencias" to this field, referring to research studies developed in the last eleven years in order to implement this approach in secondary education, as well as in teachers' education programs, and highlighting the characteristics of the SSI and the didactic intentions in this approach. Finally challenges are discussed in terms of continuing education programs for teachers in the interface university-school and in the curriculum design on SSI.
