Abstract

A methodological research was performed which allowed determining face validity and reliability of the instrument to evaluate the factors that influence on adherence to drug and non-drug treatments in patients with cardiovascular disease risk factors, with the objective of continuing their formal validation process. The instrument was designed by Bonilla and Gutiérrez, professor nurses at National University of Colombia; it consists of 72 items, grouped in five dimensions with a Likert qualification of three points. It has face validity and a content validity index of 0,91. To determine the second face validity, 40 experts and 40 patients participated through three qualification criteria: clarity, precision and comprehension, it was found that a 86% of the total of 72 items met the aforementioned criteria. As a result, a new version of the instrument was obtained, of 62 items, and the conclusion is that this new version appears to have more face validity. To determine the reliability of the instrument, the second version was applied to a sample of 831 individuals of the cities of Sincelejo and Cartagena during the months of September and October 2006, selected through a simple random sampling. Reliability was evaluated through internal consistency, with a Cronbach alpha of 0,797, and stability through Spearman correlation coefficient, with a significance level of 0,01, which reported to be statistically significant. Later Alpha analyses suggest to the instrument authors the elimination of some items to increase reliability.
