Abstract
VERGARA AMADOR, Enrique and PENAGOS, Rodrigo. Treatment of osteoarthritis of the trapeziometacarpal joint with resurfacing degradable polycaprolactone-based polyurethane (Artelon®). Rev.Colomb.Reumatol. [online]. 2012, vol.19, n.2, pp.72-77. ISSN 0121-8123.
Introduction: The objective of the treatment of metacarpal trapeziumosteo arthritisis aimed at improving pain and maintaining mobility of the thumb. This ranges from conservative to surgical treatment with multiple surgical techniques, among these the filing of Artelon®. The objective of this work is to show a series of patients with this modality of treatment. Materials and Methods: We evaluated a number of surgical cases with Artelon. We evaluated and classified them according to the Eatonand Littler radiologically assessed variables, range of motion and pain on a visual analogue scale. Results: 12 patients were evaluated (14 cases), mean age 57 years and 91% were women. The pain was 8/10 preoperativeand postoperative average of 1/10. Postoperative mobility was generally good, with flexion- extension of 32° and abduction of 33º. We found 2 minor complications that were placed proximal screw loosening on the trapeze in one patient and in another amildsubluxation of the metacarpalon thetrapezium. 100% of patients were satisfied with surgery. Discussion: Good results were achieved in terms of mobility and pain relief. It is a relatively short and simple procedure, and has shown good results, but it does not exceeds tendon suspension techniques. It's definitely an other tool in the solution of the trapeziummetacarpal osteoarthritis.
