RODRIGUEZ CACERES, Luz Stella. Ethnic recognition, right to housing and the impasses in the custody of the Afro patrimony in Rio de Janeiro. Mem. Soc. [online]. 2014, vol.18, n.37, pp.94-111. ISSN 0122-5197. https://doi.org/10.11144/Javeriana.mys18-37.redh.
The demands of the quilombos for territorial demarcation in urban contexts, reveal the paradoxes that arise from a recognition policy which separates the ethnic actors from other inhabitants who do not adhere to these identities to validate their civil rights. The Pedra do sal quilombo in Rio de Janeiro allows us to analyze the culturalist framework assumed by the recognition policies that led the patrimony, memory and local history to become the legitimizing motives in the search of civil rights in a place that is going through major urban transformations. In the middle of the renovations proposed in the project Porto Maravilha the patrimonial discourses and practices also flourish. The effectiveness of the patrimonies in the production of collective symbols and their formalization inquire the role that the black memory safeguard can play as an image in the promotion and dissemination of the revitalization process in the port region.
