Abstract
RAMIREZ DURAN, Julio; INSUASTY BURBANO, Orlando and VIVEROS VALENS, Carlos Arturo. Agro industrial yield of ten sugar cane varieties for production of panela in Santander, Colombia. Corpoica cienc. tecnol. agropecu. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.2, pp.183-195. ISSN 0122-8706.
The sugarcane crop in the geographical area called Hoya del Rio Suarez, in the departments of Boyacá and Santander (Colombia), covers about 45,000 hectares; the variety 75-11 RD is established in 70% of the cultivated area and its average growing period is 17 months. This represents a high phytosanitary risk and disadvantages versus other sugarcane producing regions with lower growth cycles. Varieties of sugarcane obtained by Cenicaña represent alternatives for the competitiveness and productivity for the Colombian sugarcane industry. Between 2007 and 2012, Corpoica and Cenicaña conducted an agro-industrial research to evaluate 78 materials in southern Santander, identifying ten promising varieties by its agro-industrial potential in tons of cane per hectare and tons of panela (unrefined whole cane sugar) per hectare. This study evaluated the agronomical characteristics of ten varieties of sugarcane under the conditions of the foothills in an area in Güepsa, Santander, and also with a commercial grinding test with a Cimpa type mill. The varieties CC 91-1555, CC 92-2198, CC 93-7510 and CC 93-7711 exceeded in 40.3, 24.2, 20.2 and 18 tons of cane per hectare and 3.2, 4.2, 2.2 and 2.5 tons of "panela" per hectare respectively, yields achieved by the variety RD 75-11 employed as a regional control in the same unit of time, which were 126.2 tons of cane per hectare and 12.1 tons of panela per hectare. The final product of the four varieties above mentioned showed optimal physicochemical characteristics of pH, soluble solids concentration, saccharose and reducing sugars, according to existing normativity.
