Abstract

LOPEZ MENDEZ, Margarita. Deterministic Construction of Female Characters in the Works of Emile Zola and Miguel de Carrión. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.1, pp.93-116. ISSN 0123-5931.  https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v21n1.74871.

The article analyzes the female characters in the works of Émile Zola and Miguel de Carrión, in order to evaluate the extent to which they are influenced by the environment (social norms and education) and by biological factors such as heredity. The analysis is based on two premises: first, that the condition of women is a theme shared by the two authors, and, second, that in the construction of their characters, naturalist novelists take into account the laws of physiological and social determinism. The paper also seeks to shed light on a chapter of the history of the influence of French naturalism in Latin American literature.

Keywords : determinism; heredity; Émile Zola; naturalism; Miguel de Carrión; female characters.
