This article deals with the origin and vicissitudes of Faculty of Technology whereas it is conceived as a Higher education project that shows its strengths and weaknesses to be taken into account when making decisions regarding widening coverage and improving quality in access to Higher education. The process is described and analyzed within the framework of the role performed by the Higher education institutions, specially the role that State universities might have, as it has been an academic space occupied by private education. It is also highlighted the need for clarity regarding the curricular model chosen for the offered programs and the field of knowledge in which academic communities emerging from the process must interact.
