Abstract
ECHEVERRI, FERNANDO and GIRALDO, CLAUDIA. Serotype Distribution and in Vitro Antibiotic Sensitivity of Streptococcus pneumoniae Strains from Invasive Disease Isolates among Children Under 15 Years Old, in Risaralda, Colombia, 1999 to 2004. Infect. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.1, pp.7-14. ISSN 0123-9392.
Objective: To identify the most prevalent serotypes and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility to penicillin and other antibiotics in children under 15 years old who have Streptococcus pneumonia einvasive disease and live in the department of Risaralda (Colombia). Method: We reviewed the data analyzed by the Instituto Nacional de Salud from S. pneumoniae sterile fluids isolated during 5 years (1999 to 2004). Results: Most prevalent serotypes of S. pneumoniae in Risaralda are not different from others departments of Colombia. Its resistance to penicillin was 22% for all children and 35% for children under 5 years old. 7.5% of the isolates had intermediated sensitivity to ceftriaxone. Conclusions: An immunization program in children under 5 years old in Risaralda would prevent a lot of cases of invasive disease by S. pneumoniae. The empiric treatment of S. pneumoniae Invasive Disease in children under 5 years old in Risaralda would include vancomycin plus a third generation cephalosporins until antibiogram is developed.
