Abstract
FACCHINI, François. Culture, cultural diversity and economic development. A critical perspective on recent work. Rev.econ.inst. [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.43, pp.79-117. Epub Feb 02, 2021. ISSN 0124-5996. https://doi.org/10.18601/01245996.v22n43.05.
This article contributes to research on the cultural determinants of nations' economic performance. The first section shows that there is no evidence that cultural homogeneity favors development. Instead, it highlights the crucial role of cultural diversity in the task of discovering opportunities of profit for entrepreneurs. The second section discusses works on the presumed existence of values toxic for development. The third section criticizes this idea and contrasts a European model of development for innovation based on individualistic values and an Asian model of development through imitation based on family and holistic values.
