Abstract

SCHMIDT, Mariana Andrea. Conflicts around the appraisal of urban wetlands. The Matanza-Riachuelo basin, Argentina. Bitácora Urbano Territorial [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.3, pp.89-98. ISSN 0124-7913.  https://doi.org/10.15446/bitacora.v28n3.63935.

In the framework of real state, infrastructure, production, and public utility projects being deployed in areas of extreme environmental fragility, the creation of protected zones in urban areas has started to be demanded and fostered. The Matanza-Riachuelo basin, one of the most densely urbanized and historically contaminated territories in Argentina, holds a set of nature reserves which declaration as such came as a result of demands put forward by local organizations, non-governmental organizations, and public bodies. Through in-depth interviews as well as the analysis of reports produced by public bodies and local organizations, legislation and other documentary sources, this article examines the debates and conflicts around the different ways of appraisal and usufruct of the goods and services that those ecosystems provide for in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires.

Keywords : environmental conflicts; ecosystem services; urban nature reserves; Matanza-Riachuelo basin; Argentina.
