Abstract
FERNANDES COSTA, Isabelle Katherinne et al. Body Image Distortion: Nursing Diagnosis and Defining Characteristics in Ostomized Patients. Aquichan [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.3, pp.270-283. ISSN 1657-5997. https://doi.org/10.5294/aqui.2017.17.3.4.
Objective:
The objective was to identify, in the literature, the defining characteristics of a nursing diagnosis of body image distortion in studies developed with ostomized patients.
Methods:
This is a bibliographical study based on an integrative review of the literature in several databases; namely, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), the Spanish Bibliographical Index of Health Sciences (IBECS), PubMed Central, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Web of Science and SciVerse Scopus (SCOPUS). It was conducted in November 2015, using a descriptive and a qualitative approach. The analysis was done by consulting the NANDA-I taxonomy and sought to identify the defining characteristics of the diagnosis in question.
Results:
The sample consisted of 43 publications, in which 14 of the 37 defining characteristics that made up the diagnosis were identified.
Conclusions:
Studies point to a relationship between body image distortion and alterations in sexuality, social restrictions, changes in lifestyle and quality of life.
