Abstract
PORTO NORONHA, Ana Paula and ALVES LAMAS, Karen Cristina. Professional Commitment Predictors and their Relationship with Academic Performance at University. Pensam. psicol. [online]. 2014, vol.12, n.2, pp.65-78. ISSN 1657-8961.
Objective. This study had two objectives. The first was to confirm the suitability of a measurement model of career commitment in the college student population. The second was to analyze to what extent certain academic, vocational, and socio-demographic variables may be predictors of commitment with the career, and whether they can predict academic performance. Method. 280 students from different undergraduate courses with an average age of 22.03 years (SD = 1.53) took part. They answered the Scale Commitment to Career and socio-demographic, vocational and academic questionnaire, in classroom, on a collective basis. Results. The results showed that the uni-dimensional structure remains in the sample of students. Also, this was found to be in the course of preference, and the intention to complete it contributes to the prediction of commitment, which is a predictor of positive perception of academic performance. Conclusion. It is concluded that career commitment is a variable that can and should be studied in the university context, and is related to vocational and performance issues. Therefore, further research is suggested.
