Abstract
MESA, José Alberto. Tendencias actuales en la educación moral. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2004, vol.2, n.1, pp.16-40. ISSN 1692-715X.
This paper presents a critical analysis of the four most influential approaches to moral education, according to Edward McClellan: Values Clarification, Character Education, moral development from Lawrence Kohlberg's perspective, and the feminist approach of caring education. The analysis of Kohlberg's ideas distinguishes between the approach derived from his psychological framework, and the Just School as his actual proposal for moral education. The analysis of these approaches is carried out from the perspective of the philosophical debate about the predicament between the role of the individual and the community for human flourishing as a key to understanding modernity and the current quest for the sense of human life. This debate is presented from the perspective of Charles Taylor's research about the origins of the concept of self, the importance of the individualistic revolution and the crisis that this revolution has implied for the concept of community. The article also assumes a concept of ethics derived from the question about the good life and not merely about rights and duties. The paper ends with a brief consideration of the challenges derived from this analysis for moral education in Latin America.
