Abstract

CORNEJO,, Cristián Busta. Pain Narratives: Fibromyalgia Syndrome from the Experience-Based Perspective of Chilean Health Professionals. Rev. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.2, pp.126-144.  Epub Aug 22, 2023. ISSN 1692-7273.  https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/revsalud/a.11560.

Introduction:

The present study aimed to comprehend personal beliefs about the fibromyalgia syndrome among a group of Chilean health professionals whose work include the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Development:

In 2018, 16 in-depth interviews were conducted with professionals with prior experience in the clinical management of fibromyalgia who had worked in both the public and private health systems in the city of Santiago, Chile.

Conclusions:

The results revealed five thematic axes that delimit and predispose clinical practices around these patients: 1) Definition and clinical picture, 2) characterization of individuals with fibromyalgia, 3) gender and fibromyalgia, 4) treatment and therapeutic relationship, and 5) fibromyalgia and family context. The results suggested that the beliefs of the treating professionals play an important role in clinical practice and connection with patients with fibromyalgia, while supporting the possibility of intervention. From the pedagogical perspective, a wide spectrum of behaviors should be modified to ensure an adequate quality of life so that this course will lead to reduced pain in this medical condition.
