During the twentieth century, Venezuela was ranked as one of the richest countries in South America, outstanding by its democratic and economic stability model. However, the capitalist rent from both the democratic era and the XXI century socialism overstated the size of the state, used subsidy mechanisms that slowed the production system, generated about inflation and fiscal deficit which produced discomfort and a social blow up. This article reflects on the crisis that this country is facing, for which purpose elements of neoliberal economic policy in 1989 and a summary of the fourteen years of the current government characterized by the exchange control measures that have generated shortages are described. Furthermore, we review the facts that triggered the social crisis in 1989 and 2014, as well as the common facts present in the two moments, the most characteristic: the insecurity.
