Abstract This essay follows the performative history of Las Negritas Puloy, a costume/ comparsa that has gained popularity after six decades of its first appearance in the Barranquilla Carnival, to the point of becoming an emblematic symbol of the festivities. This carnival has become the main cultural source for the city's identity and as such the analysis of one of its important manifestations yields important racial aspects to consider in its performative history.
