Abstract

GRANADOS ARISTIZABAL, Juan Ignacio. Designations of origin in agricultural industries: a tool for distinction and competitiveness. Rev. P+L [online]. 2012, vol.7, n.2, pp.95-105. ISSN 1909-0455.

Designations of origin are a type of distinction labels that aim to identify a product or the place in which it is produced, creating a qualitative link between the product and the climate and human characteristics of the place in which it is produced. This is why this especial category of distinctive label creates important advantages for the product ion the market. The producer gets the competitive advantage of having a product that is unique in the market and the consumer can be sure, in some way, the product has defined quality standards. This distinctive label has been traditionally used for agricultural and industrial products. Nevertheless, despite it is importantly applied in this economy sector, there are more sectors that can be benefitted with this tool. Managing and protecting the designations of origin, from a juridical point of view, is complicated due to the complexity of the system, given the fact that the protection has to be managed both locally and internationally. For the international protection, some countries have agreed and signed some treaties to widen the protection of this especial distinctive label category.

Keywords : designations of origin; distinctive label; competitiveness.
