MARCHAN CARDENAS, Juan Camilo; VISBAL SPIRKO, Lila Piedad and ACOSTA FERNANDEZ, Sinforoso Alfonso. Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors: Basic Aspects, Diagnostic Approach and Therapeutic Alternatives. Univ. Med. [online]. 2021, vol.62, n.4, pp.188-200. Epub Sep 30, 2021. ISSN 0041-9095. https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.umed62-4.tcgi.
Introduction:
Germ cell tumors are neoplasms originated by gamete precursors that, due to defects in embryological migratory processes, they can appear in extragonadal organs, such as the brain, in which they constitute a varied group of tumors.
Aim:
To present relevant and updated information about genetic, pathophysiological and clinical processes related to Intracranial Germ Cell Tumors.
Development:
Systematic research of scientific publications, by using the PICO strategy, in electronic databases.
Conclusions:
Germinomas have DNA hypomethylation while non germinomas have hypermethylation. Histologically, non germinomatous tumors show atypical cells with a high mitotic rate, which confers a poor prognosis, on the contrary to Germinoma, which is less aggressive. The diagnosis involves the measurement of Biomarkers, which are usually negative for the germinoma and positive for non-germinomas; the confirmation is histological. Cause prognosis, the tratment it will be more impetuous for non germinomatous tumors.
