Abstract

Objective:
To illustrate the historical process that led to the recognition of social and professional legitimation of engineering as well as the construction of social identity for engineers in Latin America, particularly in Colombia.
Methodology:
It starts from the perspective of methodological collectivism, in which material and cultural conditions are fundamental to contextualize and explain the processes of construction of social identity.
Results:
The profession of engineer acquired social, economic and political relevance since the State adopted it as the profession of the future, without which no country could achieve material development and progress.
Conclusion:
The engineer acquired a positive social image related to the rationalist and pragmatic spirit of the time and to his purpose.
